As part of the activities of two USAID projects, the Private Sector Regional Integration Support Activity (PSRISA) and Partnerships for Economic Growth, an informative event was held at the Economic Chamber of North Macedonia. The event, co-organized with the Center for Development Policies IDEAS DePo, focused on the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: Concept, Implementation, and Challenges.

During the event, companies were extensively informed about the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for implementation in the iron and steel sector. This included information on the requirements and procedures related to the implementation of the mechanism in their sector. Companies were briefed on what steps they need to take to comply with these requirements and continue their business collaboration smoothly with EU partners.

The iron and steel industry, being a significantly affected sector, plays a crucial role in Macedonian exports to the EU. Many domestic companies in this sector currently face the challenge of understanding how the mechanism operates and aligning their operations with the new rules for access to the EU market.

Mr. Denis Ivanov from Croatia, a consultant for technological processes/installations and an accredited verifier for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), provided a detailed presentation to the attendees. The presentation covered the reporting procedure, as well as the rules and requirements of the mechanism within the context of the iron and steel sector, emphasizing their long-term implementation.
